Yunnan Province (in simplified Chinese 云南省) is a province located at the
south-western boarder areas of People's Republic of China. The provincial
capital of Yunnan is Kunming.
Yunnan is a province dominated with plateaus, and the type of terrain is
extremely diversified. In Yunnan, there are plateaus, mountains with high,
medium and low levels, hills, basins, valleys, etc. Amount the land in Yunnan,
approximately 84% is mountain and plateau, while the land of hills and basins
occupied about 10% and another 6% of land is for valley.
In terms of education, by the end of 1998, among the province's population,
419,800 of them were college educated people, and number of people with high
degree was 2,110,000. 8.3 million of people received junior secondary level of
education, 18.25 million of people received primary level education. On the
other hand there were 8,250,000 people who were older than 15 years old but
still are illiterate. However, it is seen that more and more people have put an
effort in bringing those students to receive education and the government has
also done a lot of things to help children by providing free education for them.
Therefore, it is expected that the illiterate rate would decrease bit by bit in
the future.
In Yunnan, the natural resources are not really diversified, but in terms of
each resource, they are very rich in amount. For example, there are a lot of
animals and special plants in Yunnan, and this is very suitable for them to

for the beautiful, special rare animals.
Besides, the amount of coal found in Yunnan was quite large too. Yunnan is one
of the provinces in China which produce a lot of power through coal. In terms of
the coal storage, Yunnan ranks the third in China.
